Judge Charles H. Dorsey III has been associate judge for the Circuit Court for Baltimore City since December 22, 2016. Before his appointment to the bench, Judge Dorsey was the deputy public defender for the State of Maryland, a position he held since December 2009. The Office of the Public Defender is a state government agency committed to providing superior legal representation to accused indigent defendants in the State of Maryland by safeguarding fundamental individual rights. The Office of the Public Defender is the largest law firm in the State of Maryland. As deputy public defender, Judge Dorsey oversaw the operation of 50 offices throughout the State of Maryland, including 560 attorneys and 400 support staff. Before being appointed deputy public defender, Judge Dorsey was an assistant public defender in the Juvenile, Misdemeanor, and Felony Trial Divisions; supervising attorney of the Hargrove District Court; then chief attorney of the Baltimore City Westside District Court. He has practiced law in the State of Maryland for the last 27 years, 25 of those as a public defender for the State of Maryland. His extensive experience includes practice in criminal litigation. A past member of the Maryland State Lawyers Assistance Program, Judge Dorsey currently serves as an active member of the board of directors, where he provides support and counseling to law students and attorneys who experience problems that interfere with their ability to effectively practice law. This broad range of knowledge has given him practical courtroom experience and legal expertise that has translated well into his current executive position.
